When Should Kids Start Flossing?

It is a common question we get asked a lot! Flossing. When do we start? How do we do it? Here at Anchorage Pediatric Dentistry we love to answer questions! It is a part our job to give parents the resources and information they need so their child has the greatest success at having a healthy smile for their lifetime! Below we will give you helpful information about flossing!

What age should kids floss?

When your children reach the ages of around 2 to 3 years old or when two of their teeth begin touching this is a sign that you should start flossing.

Floss Test for toddlers

A simple test you can perform is to take a piece of floss and slide it between their teeth. If the floss sticks between their teeth, you know that it is time to start flossing!

How is flossing different than brushing?

It is important to start a regime of flossing your children’s teeth so that it develops into a habit as they grow older. Brushing alone does not remove all the dental plaque on their teeth. Flossing reaches the places a toothbrush cannot, namely in between their teeth. Plaque buildup can lead to gum disease and decay.

At what age can my child floss their own teeth?

Help your children floss daily until they are able to do it on their own. They will need assistance usually until they reach around 10 years of age, although some children master it sooner. By doing this, you will help them develop the habit of flossing daily so that when their adult teeth erupt it will become a natural part of their oral hygiene routine. I would recommend using floss that is waxed and flexible so it is easier to use and more gentle on their gums.

Flossing is a very important step in protecting your children’s teeth. It helps eliminate bacteria and plaque buildup on surfaces their toothbrushes can’t reach.
